7-Question Carbon Class Scorecard for Employees
Dr. Anju Sharma MrsSustainability
Carbon class is not decided only by what a company says in its sustainability report.
It is decided by what employees can actually find, explain, trace and prove.
The next carbon divide will not only be:
Clean vs dirty.
It will be:
Measurable vs invisible.
Use this simple scorecard.
Score each question from 1 to 3:
1 = We do not really know / mostly manual
2 = We have some information, but it is incomplete or scattered
3 = We have clear, reliable, traceable information
1. Are emissions actually reducing?
Can we show year-on-year reduction, not just lower production or one-time changes?
1: Not clear
2: Improving in some areas
3: Clear reduction with evidence
2. Do we know where emissions come from?
Can we identify emissions from energy, fuel, transport, raw materials, suppliers, waste or product use?
1: Only broad numbers
2: Major sources known, gaps remain
3: Traceable to sites, processes and products
3. Is carbon data easy to find?
Is the data in one system, or scattered across Excel files, emails, PDFs and invoices?
1: Manual and scattered
2: Partly digital, fragmented
3: Structured and retrievable
4. Do we have supplier and Scope 3 visibility?
Do suppliers give actual emissions data, or do we mostly use assumptions?
1: Mostly missing
2: Partial supplier data
3: Updated and linked to purchasing decisions
5. Are calculation methods consistent?
Do teams calculate carbon in the same way every year?
1: Unclear or changing
2: Partly documented
3: Consistent and explainable
6. Can claims survive scrutiny?
Can we show meter readings, invoices, supplier declarations, calculations and approvals?
1: Difficult to prove
2: Some claims proven
3: Key claims audit-ready
7. Can carbon proof help business win?
Can it support tenders, exports, green claims, ESG ratings, finance and customer trust?
1: Not business-ready
2: Useful in parts
3: Market-ready proof
Add your score
19–21 = Carbon Upper Class
Improving emissions + strong proof + business-useful carbon data.
12–18 = Carbon Middle Class
Good effort + partial proof + lost premium risk.
The work may be happening.
The proof may not be travelling.
7–11 = Carbon Working Class
High exposure + weak proof + margin pressure.
This scorecard is not meant to blame employees.
It reveals where the organisation needs stronger systems.
In the carbon economy:
Performance without proof loses value.
Readable companies become bankable.
Traceable companies become tradable.
