TheMetamorphosisOfAI: When Giants Grow Utility Bones
Dr. Anju Sharma | MrsSustainability
The old tech giant is shedding skin.
Not declining. Not pivoting. Shedding.
The outer shell still sparkles apps, ads, cloud, social.
But underneath, a different creature is forming.
It eats chips.
It drinks electricity.
It breathes cooling.
It wakes up asking for land, transformers, and permits.
BigTechIsNowCapitalHeavy
Alphabet, Amazon, Meta & Microsoft are projected to spend about $635 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026, up from $383 billion in 2025 and just $80 billion in 2019. That is not a normal tech cycle. That is a balance sheet growing utility bones.
AI_IsNotAssetLight
AI arrived with copper, concrete, substations & power risk.
The IEA says global data-centre electricity use is set to rise to about 945 TWh by 2030, nearly double current levels and just under 3% of global electricity demand.
In the U.S., data centres could account for nearly half of electricity demand growth to 2030.
NewTechLooksLikeAUtility
That is the real metamorphosis.
What used to look like a software company is starting to behave like a utility only with better branding and prettier keynote slides.
OpenAI IsInfrastructureNow
OpenAI’s latest raise makes that brutally clear. It reportedly closed a $122 billion funding round at about an $852 billion valuation. That is not startup finance. That is frontier infrastructure capital in a hoodie.
EveryTransformationLeavesSkinBehind
AI is not only creating new capex.
It is rewriting workforce math too.
Oracle has begun layoffs affecting thousands while expecting up to $2.1 billion in restructuring charges for fiscal 2026. Amazon had already announced about 16,000 job cuts as it redirected for efficiency and AI priorities.
AsiaIsTheMetabolism
If America is still the face of AI, Asia is becoming more of its bloodstream.
TSMC held about 72% of the pure-play foundry market in Q4 2025. On AI memory, Samsung said SK hynix held roughly 53% HBM share, with Samsung at 35% and Micron at 11% in Q3 2025. The software may speak in California. The metabolism is increasingly Asian.
IndiaIsBuildingSovereignCompute
This is where the Indian story gets interesting.
Reliance plans to invest about $110 billion in AI infrastructure over seven years, with 120+ MW expected in Jamnagar in 2026.
Adani has separately announced $100 billion toward renewable-backed AI data centres by 2035. This is not app ambition. This is a gigawatt dream in a digital kurta.
TheAIRaceHasChanged
So no this is no longer model vs model.
It is metabolism vs metabolism.
WhoLocksPowerFirst
WhoGetsLandFirst
WhoSecuresChipsFirst
WhoSurvivesThePermitQueue
The face of AI is not changing cosmetically. It is changing structurally. The giants are not upgrading. They are molting into utilities.
