Sustainable_Aviation_Fuel (SAF) is a type of biofuel designed to power aircraft with a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to traditional jet fuel.
Indian_Sugar & Bio_Energy_Manufacturers_Association (ISMA) has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and PRAJ Industries to advance sustainable bioenergy solutions. This collaboration focuses on SAF and explores the potential of bio_ethanol, bio_gas, green_bio_hydrogen, and green_methanol.
This initiative aims to build a bio-economy and low-carbon energy infrastructure in India, aligning with the government’s sustainability goals. By leveraging TERI’s research and policy expertise and PRAJ’s technology solutions, this partnership will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation industry, which accounts for about 3% of global carbon emissions.
Feedstocks: SAF is produced from renewable biomass and waste resources, including used cooking oil, animal fats, agricultural residues, forestry residues, municipal solid waste, and algae.
Carbon_Emissions: Depending on the feedstock and production process, SAF can reduce life cycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.
Blending: Currently, SAF can be blended with traditional jet fuel up to 50%, but there are efforts to increase this to 100% by 2030.
Performance: SAF has similar properties to conventional jet fuel, ensuring it meets the same safety and performance standards.
Economic Benefits: The production of SAF can create new economic opportunities, especially in farming communities, by providing additional revenue streams and improving soil quality.
