Burning Problems: Why India’s Waste_to_Energy Plants Running Out of Steam

Static Summary of India’s Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Sector

1. Current Status: Out of 77 waste-to-energy plants in India, only 10 are operational, 15 are under construction, 41 are proposed, and 11 have terminated contracts or unclear status.

2. High Waste Generation: Major cities like Delhi (11,342 tons/day) and Hyderabad (6,900 tons/day) generate significant amounts of municipal solid waste, but much of it remains untapped for energy generation.

3. Key Flaw: Mixed waste composition with low calorific value, high organic and moisture content, and insufficient segregation at the source are major barriers to efficient energy conversion.

4. Environmental and Economic Challenges: Many WtE plants face issues like air pollution, poor financial viability, and continued reliance on landfills for unprocessed or residual waste.

5. Untapped Potential: Despite a potential energy generation capacity of 5,690 MW, India’s installed capacity remains only 556 MW due to systemic inefficiencies and policy gaps.

Steps to Address Challenges

1. Enhance Source Segregation and Public Awareness: Strict policies and education campaigns for waste sorting at source.

2. Upgrade Technology and Pre-treatment Methods: Use modern technologies like advanced gasification and plasma arc to improve waste calorific value and efficiency.

3. Promote Composting and Biogas: Channel organic waste to composting or anaerobic digestion plants instead of incineration.

4. Mitigate Environmental Impacts: Install pollution control systems and enforce strict real-time emission monitoring.

5. Strengthen Policy and Economic Support: Encourage public-private partnerships, offer financial incentives, and define clear regulations to improve plant viability.

NamasteIndia.. SAADHA PUNJAB Punjab’s state-run power plants using biomass pellets:

Biomass Utilization: Punjab’s power plants are incorporating biomass pellets made from paddy straw as a fuel source.
CropResidue Reduction: Blending biomasspellets with coal helps reduce crop residue burning and air pollution.
PurchaseOrders: PSPCL has ordered 6,000 metric tonnes of straw pellets, with more procurement planned.
Specific Plants: Ropar and Lehra Mohabbat units will receive significant quantities of pellets.
Cost Considerations: Although slightly costlier than coal, the focus is on curbing stubble burning.
Private Plants: Private thermal power plants in Punjab are also adopting straw pellets .
