FAB_is_VISIBLE but MOAT_is_MOLECULAR?

Why semiconductor sovereignty is moving from capex to chemistry.

Industrial policy still funds the visible asset the fab while strategic advantage is shifting into the invisible ecosystem around it.

A €20B cleanroom photographs well: land, cranes, subsidies & ribbon-cutting. Chemistry does not.

Yet semiconductor materials were already a $73.2B market in 2025. TSMC held 72% of global foundry revenue in Q1 2026, while Japan accounted for ~50% of global photoresists & ~53% of silicon wafers.

That changes the industrial-development equation.

FAB SOVEREIGNTY ≠ SEMICONDUCTOR SOVEREIGNTY

A fab depends on hundreds of tightly controlled inputs: photoresists, CMP slurries, specialty gases, ALD/CVD precursors, ultra-pure acids & solvents.

Making the molecule is only Step 1.

Purity → Consistency → Qualification → Yield

A chemical may meet specification & still fail inside a fab. The moat is not the molecule alone. It is purification, parts-per-trillion analytics, local logistics, application engineering, qualification history & customer yield confidence.

KtalystRiskLens™

Using our 5T → 5P → 5E Lens, the industry investment question must move from:

Can we build a fab?

to:

Can we build a qualified industrial system?

Five implications follow:

Build ecosystems, not isolated assets. A fab without qualified chemicals, water, waste treatment, tool servicing & packaging only relocates dependency.

Incentivise qualification, not just capacity. Reward customer approvals, yield milestones & supply agreements—not installed tonnes.

Map chokepoints before declaring sovereignty. KtalystRiskLens™: Concentration × Substitutability × Qualification Time × Yield Criticality.

Build where demand creates pull. Germany shows the contrast: Intel’s Magdeburg plan was cancelled, while Infineon opened its €5B Dresden Smart Power Fab in July 2026 within an established semiconductor cluster.

Define sovereignty as indispensability, not autarky. No country needs to make everything. It needs to control enough of what others cannot easily replace.

**Semiconductor Sovereignty =

Manufacturing × Materials × Qualification × Yield × Resilience**

If one variable approaches zero, the equation weakens.

The first chip race was about fabs.

The next may be decided by molecules, qualification cycles & ultra-trace contamination.

As a €20B fab without qualified chemistry is not sovereignty.

It is dependency with a far more expensive cleanroom.
