We Broke the Sky. We Healed It. Can We Do the Same for Climate?
Now CO₂ is breaking the climate.
In the 1980s, the ozone layer—our shield against harmful UV—was breaking apart. Skin cancers surged, crops weakened, and ecosystems faltered. The invisible gases we used every day in sprays, refrigerators, and foams were silently dismantling the sky.
Why did the hole happen?
a) CFCs and halons rose into the stratosphere.
b) UV light split them, releasing chlorine and bromine.
c) One chlorine atom destroyed up to 100,000 ozone molecules.
d) Antarctic cold clouds trapped air and supercharged the reaction.
e) The result was the dramatic “ozone hole” first observed in the 1980s.
Who was responsible?
a) United States & Europe → nearly 70% of cumulative CFC emissions by the 1980s.
b) Japan & Industrial Asia → around 10%, especially in electronics and foams.
c) Soviet bloc → about 10%, heavy industrial and military usage.
d) Emerging economies (India, China, Brazil) → less than 10% initially but rising fast.
How did the world respond?
a) 1987 → MontrealProtocol signed by 24 nations + EC to phase out CFCs.
b) 1989 → Treaty enters into force; momentum builds.
c) 1991 → Multilateral Fund created, ensuring developing nations could afford the transition.
d) By 2009 → became the first treaty with universal ratification (197 UN member states).
e) Today → ozone recovery is on track: 2040 (global), 2045 (Arctic), 2066 (Antarctica).
What this means for NetZero
a) Then: CFCs broke the sky. Now: CO₂ is breaking the climate.
b) Healing proof → Global treaties can work when guided by science, deadlines, and accountability.
c) Shared sky → No one owns the atmosphere, but everyone shares its fate.
d) Equity matters → Just as richer nations funded substitutes, climate finance must support developing countries.
e) Economic logic → Every $1 invested in ozone protection delivered $30 in benefits; Net Zero too is not a burden, it is a dividend.
The ozone hole was man-made, but so was its cure. Healing the sky was our rehearsal of responsibility. Healing the climate is the final exam—and the grade will be written in degrees Celsius.” – Dr. Anju Sharma
