KtalystGeoEconomics: Acid test of Waring Gulf to our Food, Batteries & Chips

Bloomberg reported that China plans to halt sulphuric acid exports from May 2026. WSJ says about half of global sulphur exports pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters then traced the fallout into copper and nickel, with costs already rising across exposed producers.

This is not a niche chemical update. It is a map of industrial stress.

Gulf → sulphur squeeze → China export halt → pressure on fertilizers, copper, nickel, batteries, and semiconductors.

That is the chain.

1. The Gulf is the choke point.
✓ WSJ says roughly 50% of global sulphur exports move through Hormuz.
✓ Reuters says India imports over half its sulphur needs, around 2 million tonnes a year, mainly from the Middle East.
✓ Reuters also says Indonesia sources about 75% of its sulphur imports from the Middle East, with some stockpiles lasting only 1–2 months.

2. The price shock is already real.
✓ WSJ says sulphuric acid prices cited by Ivanhoe Mines jumped from about $150/tonne to as high as $800/tonne.
✓ Reuters says sulphur prices in Indonesia were already around $500/tonne and then rose another 10–15%.
✓ Reuters says every $100 rise in sulphur prices adds about 4% to operating costs for Congolese copper producers.

3. Industry pain is geography-specific.
✓ India feels it first through fertilizers and farm-input stress.
✓ Indonesia feels it through nickel HPAL, where Reuters says costs have already risen by about $4,000 per tonne of nickel produced.
✓ Chile and DRC feel it through acid-intensive copper flows.
✓ China feels it too, because Reuters says the export halt can trap acid domestically and pressure smelter economics.

4. This is why “basic chemical” is now a misleading label.
✓ Fertilizer is still the biggest use. WSJ says it is the leading outlet for sulphuric acid.
✓ Copper is exposed because acid-heavy SX-EW hydrometallurgy still matters. ICSG estimates SX-EW accounted for around 16% of world refined copper production.
✓ Semiconductor fabs use ultra-pure sulphuric acid too. BASF is expanding semiconductor-grade sulphuric acid capacity in Germany, with startup expected by 2027.

5. The modern twist is the fab floor.
TSMC says sulphuric acid is widely used in wafer cleaning processes and reported waste-reduction projects cutting over 17,000 metric tons of waste. So yes, the same broader chemistry chain touching fertilizer and metals also reaches the AI hardware stack.

The market loves glamorous scarcity.
Lithium. Silicon. Rare earths.

But real disruption often starts with the inputs nobody respected enough.

This is not one chemical getting expensive.
This is one geography repricing multiple industries at once.

The future may run on silicon, but its cost curve is still being written by sulphur.”— Dr. Anju Sharma
