A Shattering Experience!

Dr. Anju Sharma
Today, from a village where families depend on government ration shops for their daily food grains.
I came back with a heavy heart.
The villagers spoke about something that shook me deeply: plastic rice allegedly mixed with actual rice.
For many of us, rice is just a meal.
For them, it is survival.
It is the child’s lunch.
The mother’s worry.
The father’s helpless silence.
The family’s only assurance that the day will not end hungry.
And yet, before cooking, they have to sit and check every handful of rice with fear in their eyes.
Is this grain real?
Is this safe?
Will this harm my child?
Some families spend hours, even days, trying to separate suspicious grains before they can cook a meal.
Imagine the pain of poverty becoming even heavier because the food meant to protect you now makes you afraid.
Food security cannot end at distribution.
It must reach the cooking pot with dignity.
It must reach the child’s plate with safety.
It must reach the poor without suspicion, fear, or humiliation.
Today, sustainability did not look like a big policy word.
It looked like a village woman sitting on the floor, holding rice in her palm, trying to choose between hunger and fear.
No family should have to inspect survival grain by grain.
A ration bag should carry hope.
Not doubt.
Not danger.
Not tears.
