AI Ate My Carbon Budget
A GreenwashingWeek Poem
Dr. Anju Sharma | MrsSustainability | KtalystInsights™
Earth Day came with plants and praise,
Green hashtags filled our digital days.
Leaf emojis bloomed in every feed,
While carts kept scrolling things we don’t need.
I asked AI to write me “green,
It answered back in glowing sheen.
A thousand prompts, a million sparks,
Tiny carbon hiding in the dark.
My coffee came by bike — how sweet.
My fifth online order reached my street.
I streamed a show on “saving seas,
With three ACs humming in the breeze.
The cloud looked soft, a cotton sky,
Until I learned the truth behind the lie.
It wasn’t floating over blue lagoons…
It was giant servers sweating in rooms.
Every swipe has a socket.
Every reel burns a rocket.
Every click has a hidden grill,
Somewhere turning coal to thrill.
I said:
I’m eco-friendly. Mostly kind.
Then panic-buffered my peace of mind.
Because sustainability today feels strange:
We save paper…
then buy six chargers we never change.
We carry steel bottles with climate pride,
While fast-fashion parcels queue outside.
We plant one tree with photo delight,
Then doom-scroll carbon every night.
Perhaps the planet does not sigh
From one big villain in the sky.
Perhaps Earth quietly loses breath
From billions choosing “easy” instead.
So this GreenwashingWeek I confess:
My footprint wears wireless dress.
Not muddy boots.
Not factory smoke.
Just endless convenience wrapped as joke.
And maybe the future’s greenest art
Is not a filter.
But a conscious start.
