CarbonRemovalPathway: The Tonne Has Entered Its Audit Era
Dr. Anju Sharma•MrsSustainability
The EU adopted its first certification methodologies for permanent carbon removals on 3 February 2026, covering DACCS, BioCCS, and biochar.
Nasdaq and Adyen are backing Stockholm Exergi’s project in what WSJ describes as the first sale of EU-licensed carbon-removal credits. Operations are due to begin in 2028.
Stockholm Exergi says the facility is designed to capture 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. Estimated investment: about SEK 13 billion. That is not ESG décor. That is climate infrastructure with a capital bill.
Biggest quarter ever for durable carbon removal contracting, with 15.48 million tonnes sold, including 14.6 million tonnes bought by Microsoft. Even excluding Microsoft, more than 60 companies bought about 902,000 tonnes.
WSJ notes estimates that carbon removal could become a $250 billion market by midcentury yet current volumes remain far below what climate targets would require.
Do
✓ Abate first. Remove last.
Use removals for residual emissions, not as perfume for a weak transition plan. Critics already warn the market could drift into greenwashing if removals displace real cuts.
✓ Buy permanence, not PR.
The EU framework is built around what counts as a tonne, how permanence is ensured, and how leakage and liabilities are handled.
✓ Audit the tonne like a CFO, not admire it like a poet.
If the MRV is weak, the claim is weak. If the storage logic is fuzzy, the value is fuzzy. This is an inference from the EU methodology design.
Dont
❌ Don’t use removals as a velvet curtain for slow abatement.
That is not transition. That is premium-priced procrastination.
❌ Don’t confuse certification with bankability.
A certified tonne can still be scarce, costly, contract-heavy, and execution-sensitive. Certification is the entry gate, not the business model. This is an inference based on the early-stage market and project economics.
❌ Don’t outsource credibility to a glossy brochure.
In carbon markets, storytelling is cheap.
Surviving scrutiny is expensive.

The old offset market sold emotion.
The new removal market will sell durability, data, and defendability.
The question is no longer:
Did you buy a carbon credit?
The real question is:
Will that tonne survive an audit, a regulator, and a cynical investor in the same room?
Dr. Anju Sharma
In carbon markets, the most expensive line item is not removal. It is reputational reversal.
